The Best Wedding

The Best Wedding. You've waited in anticipation to see what I'm talking about, haven't you? Maybe you thought, "The nerve! Does Paul actually think that his and Sarah's wedding is going to supercede all weddings hitherto and hence?" Or maybe you thought I'd say something schmaltzy like, "The best wedding is the one, where the couple has tons of fun! Listen to your own hearts, you'll never throw hurtful darts. Always la de da, and never da de da." If you were looking for something like that, there are a million web pages to suit that whim (most with midi and/or enough angel graphics to make even the hosts of TrinityBroadcastingNetwork annoyed).

Here is what I envision when I ponder the quintessentially best wedding:
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

Ephesians 5:25-27

'Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.' And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And he said to me, 'Write, Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.' And he said to me, 'These are true words of God'.

Revelation 19:7-9

What can I add? Do you think any of the above sounds strange? I do, and you should. Paul says "This mystery is great," in Eph. 5:32. We can hardly imagine what it actually means to be married to Christ, not only because our mind has a difficult time comprehending the divine, but also due to our state as fallible humans who already have skewed notions on what marriage should and should not be. Those who have accepted Christ as their savior have the promise of being a part of this mystery.
